When I saw my very first Malamute at a fun match in
early 1970, I thought he was the most magnificent puppy I'd ever
seen. I was showing German Shepherds, primarily in obedience, at the
time but was convinced I would someday have one of those
"husky" dogs. As fate would have it, a year later that same
puppy's owner called to tell me he was in serious financial
difficulty and offered to sell me the dog for $50. That puppy (by
then a young adult) was my "Black Jack" and became my first
Alaskan Malamute Champion and C.D.
In the mid-70's I purchased a bitch, whom I called
"Zizi". She too became a Champion quite easily and earned
her C.D.X. in obedience, much to the thrill of the other local
malamute exhibitors & friends who had rarely, if ever, seen a
malamute perform in advanced obedience. For many years, I owned just
a few dogs and produced some nice Champions including my first
homebred, Ch. Vykon's Bad Bad Leroy Brown, C.D.X. Our dogs won some
Specialties, placed in some Groups, and won Blackhawk & Oonanik
Memorial obedience awards.
In 1985 I made the wisest decision of my lifetime
in malamutes - I purchased two dogs from Terry Sewell (Kiwalik). I
wanted some dogs with pure T'Domar/Kodara bloodlines and their
linebred pedigree was just what my breeding program needed. Those 2
dogs became Ch. Kiwalik's Vykon Indiana Jones, C.D.,R.O.M.,
S-C.D.,T.T. and Ch. Kiwalik's Nomi of Excalibur, C.D.,R.O.M.,T.T.
Indy & Mona changed the entire look of the Vykon dogs and
literally "put us on the map". They are responsible for a
total of 27 American Champions, including Best in Show & Best in
Specialty winners, Group winners & placers, Grand Sweepstakes
winners, National Specialty Award of Merit winners, C.D.'s, C.D.X.'s,
Canadian Champions, and an Australian Champion & BIS winner. I
can't begin to count the number of Champion grandchildren &
great-grandchildren they currently have in the U.S., Mexico, Europe,
Japan & Australia, but it's easily 100+ - and the number keeps
growing! Needless to say, whenever a Vykon dog wins, you can bet that
Indy or Mona can claim some responsibility for that success!
We breed on a rather limited scale and are
extremely selective about the dogs used in our program. As a result,
a large percentage of puppies from each litter finishes their Championships. Over the
years, our dogs have ranked as top stud dog, top brood bitch, top
area class dogs & bitches, top puppies, and specials. Many have
been ranked high on the national scale as well. Our
"Sherman" was the nation's #1 Alaskan Malamute in 1990, #3
in '89 and #3 in '91. "Indy" was raked #5 in the nation the
year he was specialed. We have earned Top Breeder in the nation on
several occasions and consistently rank among the top breeders
nationally each year.
We have currently bred over 80 AKC Champions.
All dogs used in our breeding program are OFA Good
or Excellent, eye CERF'd,
and ChD clear. All puppies/dogs are sold with a
written contract & guarantee.
Inquiries are best handled over the telephone (even
